Christophe Karas

Christophe Karas is the newly appointed Director of Music at St George’s College, UWA, having recently returned from the UK, where he was awarded his Masters in Choral Studies from the University of Cambridge. Following his studies, Christophe spent a year as Director of Music at St Mark’s, Cambridge, during which time he was a frequent guest conductor and singer with various Cambridge college choirs, including King’s, Queens’, Jesus, Caius, and Pembroke.

He began his musical education as a chorister at St George’s Cathedral, Perth in 1994 under the direction of Simon Lawford, where he continued to sing as Lay Clerk until 2012. Subsequently he was appointed Director of Music at Christ Church, Claremont, where he developed a thriving professional music programme, whilst also being a regular guest conductor of the Giovanni Consort, and Artistic Director of the Claremont Consort and Churchlands Choral Society.

Christophe completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Western Australia in 2009 with a Bachelor of Music, studying violin with Paul Wright. He has performed with international groups including the Hilliard Ensemble, Academy of Ancient Music and I Fagiolini, and as a violinist with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Australian Classical Era Orchestra, Perth Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Philharmonic and Darwin Symphony Orchestra.

In 2016 Christophe performed in Masterclasses with Stephen Layton (Trinity College Choir, Cambridge), and Stephen Cleobry (Kings College Choir, Cambridge), whilst being the resident Masters student conductor of St Catharine’s College Choir.

Christophe is also passionate about children’s musical education, and in 2015/16 was regularly involved with the acclaimed St Catharine’s College Girls Choir, and the Armonico Consort (London) Academy Training Programme, culminating in a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
