Andrew O’Connor

Born in Perth, Andrew graduated from the University of Western Australia (BMus & BArts – Specialist Music Studies) in 2012, before developing a successful teaching career in Perth, and performing both around Australia and internationally with a particular interest in opera, oratorio, art song, contemporary music, and vocal chamber music. Andrew relocated to Sydney in 2015 to join The Song Company. The Song Company is Australia’s only full-time classical ensemble specialising in vocal chamber music, and its 100+ concerts each year have grown to include a mix of national and international touring, festival appearances, recording and broadcast projects, specialist opera projects, education activities, and special collaborative projects.

In 2016 he performs with Pinchgut Opera,Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Cantillation, Australian World Orchestra, Moorambilla Voices, Forma Antiqva, Sydney Antiphony, Hourglass Ensemble, St Mary’s Cathedral Choir, Choir of St James’ and more. Engagements in 2015 included performances with New Zealand String Quartet, Australian Haydn Ensemble, Sydney Symphony Orchestra Quartet, Ensemble Offspring, Hourglass Ensemble, ANAM Strings & Winds, Canberra Choral Society, Acacia Quartet, Sydney Antiphony, Choir of St James, The Idea of North, and Australian Baroque Brass.

His operatic experience includes five years with West Australian Opera (2009 – 2014) including regional tours in the South-West & Goldfields, and roles with independent opera companies including Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Polyphemus (Acis & Galatea), Aeneas (Dido & Aeneas), Caronte (L’Orfeo), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Zeus (Orfee aux Enfers), Die Totengraber (Die Rose die Pilgerfahrt), and creating the role of Daniel (Plains of Promise). On the concert platform he has performed as soloist in Johannes-Passion (J.S. Bach); Matthäus- Passion (J.S. Bach); Saul (Handel); Messiah (Handel); Te Deum (Charpentier); Seven Last Words on the Cross (Haydn); Coronation Mass, Spätzenmesse, Great Mass in C Minor (Mozart); Petite Messe Solennelle (Rossini); and the requiem settings of Mozart, Faure, and Durufle.

He has toured internationally and domestically with The Australian Voices SIX, toured five times (to every state and territory in Australia) with the National Youth Choir of Australia. He has recorded with Song Company, Sydney Antiphony, Cantillation, Hourglass Ensemble, and St George’s Cathedral Consort. His festival appearances include Serenade! (Washington D.C), Metropolis New Music Festival (Melbourne), Canberra International Music Festival, Tyalgum Music Festival, Spectrum Now (Sydney), Adelaide Festival, and Perth International Arts Festival.

As an educator and choral conductor, Andrew has previously held positions at the Christ Church Grammar School, Claremont and John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School, Perth. In his new home of Sydney, Andrew has a small stable of private students and works extensively with students of all ages via the Song Company’s education program. He is thrilled to be returning to Perth for this new venture in choral excellence as specialist vocal tutor.
